Portrait
of the Walrus by A Young Artist
A
novel by Laurie Foos
"A
mad tale of a mad genius, by a young author who may
be a genius herself . . . . Brilliant, fresh, and remarkable:
one of the few works of recent years in which brave
originality is sustained by genuine skill." - Kirkus
Review
"An
amusing satire of artists and their critics as well
as an absurdist tale of a teenage girl dealing with
her sexuality." - Library Journal
Lauded
as ‘the unholy love-child of Kafka and Erica Jong,’
Foos lampoons the art world, middle class, and the media,
while exploring the mystery of the imagination.
Portrait
of the Walrus by a Young Artist is a zany story of sexual
identity, repressions, obsession, and the concept of
art as both a destructive and redeeming force. Daughter
of the famous sculptor of Men With Chainsaws, Frances
Fisk must come to terms with her father’s death, her
mother’s marriage to "the Kingpin," and her
own obsession with her artistic muse - the walrus. Foos,
a brilliant young satirist, has the ability to make
this bizarre coming-of-age tale sound matter-of-fact.
Laurie
Foos is author of the internationally praised first

from Brooklyn College. She teaches at Bentley College.
