Iovis Book II Poems
by Anne Waldman "Iovis
Book II retains a firm hold on relevance with its accrual of talon-sharp details." - Publisher’s Weekly
The
companion volume to the highly praised experimental epic poem Iovis: All is Full
of Jove.
Anne
Waldman extends the theme of "male energy," by unmasking this power
in all its guises - historical, mythical, political, philosophical, spiritual,
and autobiographical. She expands the focus by recombining masculine and feminine
energies, calling on female voices to join the male. Iovis Book II takes on an
elegiac tone, resulting in the most ambitious achievement by one of America’s
major poets.
Waldman
steps into Indonesia, Mexico, and India as easily as
she glides into antiquity, flowing from the present
- Bosnia, AIDS, and gun control - to Sappho, classic
archetypes, and Greek myth. She invokes modernist painter
Philip Guston’s Muse and laments dear friends and lovers
now lost. This poem is a diatribe and a passionate exploration
encompassing the whole of the poet - the complex accord
of male and female. Waldman has created a composition,
a piece of art, beyond any demarcations - a world that
dances, sings, and proclaims its linguistic and lyrical
power.
