"The typical Troupe poem comes at the reader like a locomotive on fire, full of blazing and powerful imagery." —Ishmael Reed, The San Diego Reader
Avalanche continues the themes this renowned author developed in his previous books, including Snake-Back Solos, winner of the American Book Award. As he explores the sacred and the everyday, Troupe challenges the reader to see the world as it is, and as it appears. The book is also enriched by tributes to writers, artists, and musicians who have inspired and motivated him.
Some of the poems included in this collection were used as the basis for the great Cuban artist’s show "Jose Bedia: The Poetry Series, from the Poems of Quincy Troupe," which was on display at the Porter Randall Gallery of La Jolla, California, in September 1994.
Featured in two PBS poetry series, Troupe is the author of seven volumes of poetry including Transcircularities, a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year and a selection in the Minnesota-based Talking Volumes Book Club. In addition to chronicling his friendship with Miles Davis in Miles and Me, Troupe has recently published children’s books on Magic Johnson and Stevie Wonder. A St. Louis native, he divides his time between New York and a countryside village in Montebello, Guadeloupe.
