Wang Ping was born in Shanghai and grew up on a small island in the East China Sea. After three years of farming in a mountain village, she attended Beijing University and in 1985 left China to study in the U.S., earning her doctorate from New York University. The acclaimed author of two short story collections: The Last Communist Virgin and American Visa, the novel Foreign Devil, and two poetry collections: Of Flesh & Spirit and The Magic Whip, Wang also won a Eugene M. Kayden Award for her cultural study Aching for Beauty: Footbinding in China and edited and co-translated the anthology New Generation: Poetry from China Today. Photos from a recent visit to China, Behind the Gate: China in Flux After the Flood of the Three Gorges Dam, are currently on exhibit at the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. Wang lives in St. Paul and teaches at Macalester College.
